Well, some details hit at The Verge regarding the 'possibility' of Valve creating a Steam Box: http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/2/284...gaming-console
It's going to happen. Anyone that knows the industry has known this was going to happen for the past couple years.
Thoughts?
I've been saying this for years.
Can anyone say 3D0? That was a console that had several different manufacturers and it did not end very well. Even if this is priced right I am not sure how it will do. Its an interesting idea but one that will have to be implemented well and come with a good price point.
Wikipedia tells me that the 3DO had limited 3rd party development for games and also had an asking price of $700. Wiki also told me that it lacked decent exclusive titles, something which Valve has already established. These were all cited as major reasons for the system's failure, 2 of which don't apply here (seeing as how third party development seems to be the point of this whole thing) and the third of which has yet to be determined (much like you pointed out when discussing it's price point). While I see how letting different developers in on manufacturing could be a problem, I feel like the way Valve is going about this will more mimic the Android system as suggested by the article.
