Granted, but the friends I do have that are posted around the UK rarely get to come home either, even when they're due leave too. I've got a friend based in Harrogate, it's half an hour drive from where I live at the minute and I haven't seen him for about two months now, he was supposed to come home on the Friday just gone but due to the threat of the fuel strike by tanker drivers he's had his weeks leave revoked and has been thrown on a course with the rest of his squadron down in Essex to learn to drive the rigs. Couple that with the lads holiday we booked for June, which he's now not able to go on either because he's been told he has to take part in Op. Olympics, and a life in the forces isn't all it's cracked up to be, maybe 15/20 years ago it would have been worthwhile joining up but nowadays it's a complete and utter shitfest. You're nothing more than a cog to the superiors, and either you do as you say or they get rid of you in one way or another. I'm an army brat myself, I've seen and endured my fair share of shit growing up over the years. My mate has already put in to get out for next year because he hates it that much, he doesn't even give a fuck what he does afterwards either. He'd be quite happy to stack shelves in Tesco for minimum wage as long as he gets to see his family and friends when he wants. I contemplated joining myself before I decided to give higher education one last go, but after seeing the majority of my close friends sign up I wouldn't even give it a second look, even though I myself could join as an officer because of whatever qualifications I've got.
If you make it to your forties that is. You wouldn't be set for the rest of your life either, a forces pension isn't anywhere enough to live off, unless you're highly ranked, and I'm talking the upper echelons here, not even an officer pension would suffice. Even more so when you take into account the mortgage you've got to pay for, the utility bills that have to be paid, and a family that's still there to support.

True, sales people generally make the better money, but it's still quite frustrating. When I was in radio, I would work 70 hours a week for shit pay running the news department and creating the content those asshats were selling. They'd make much more than me, work much less and in all reality, for the most part, weren't very good people. The content I generated was their highest valued product, and I got shit out of that. Easy to feel bitter.
well the pension obviously depends on your rank. if you were an officer and made it into your 40s, there is no way you would still be a lieutenant still. bare minimum of captain at least, which is 2 grand a month pension. personally i think that is enough to live off if all you are doing is retiring. you could easily work though in your 40s and still get your pension.
standard pension would be about a grand a month, which isn't really enough to retire on, it is what you would be earning on any entry level job above min wage.
maybe your mates joined when they were too young. fuck from 18 to 24 i've done nothing worthwhile with my life besides go uni, do drugs, had various jobs and eat pussy.

It doesn't bother me. I live in a well off area so just about everybody knows someone who is able to get them a nice job. People getting jobs based off of connections rather than their qualifications are just how things work. I just learned to not let it bother me.

They'd be fucking stupid to try anything though. Our troops have been in perpetual conflict for the last decade, and they're about as battle-hardened as you can get. I doubt they'd ever get close enough to land troops anyway, submarines patrol the area and a squadron of Typhoons defends the airspace. The Argentinian's most advanced fighters are aging Mirages, the Typhoons wouldn't even need to take off to take those heaps of shit out.
So taking that into account what would you say is the main reason you'd sign up, should you actually do so at some point in the future? I'm gonna' go out on a limb here and say that the reason you give is more than likely the same one that everyone else uses. Take away the university part and that's essentially what each and every one of my friends did themselves, and probably what most other soldiers did too. They saw signing up as stability, both from a financial aspect and a profession aspect. The army paint a great picture of themselves to lure people in; you make friends for life, you get to see the world, you can learn plenty of trades, you've got a set income every month, you'd never have to worry about being out of a job in the current economic climate, etc, etc. That's all well and good hearing that when you sign up, but once you've signed that life of yours away a lot of that soon gets taken away. You're there to do as they say, and when they fucking say it, no questions asked. Doesn't matter whether you're a fullscrew or a captain, that shit runs from bottom to top.
I'd give it a long hard look at and think about if I was in your position and contemplating signing up myself.

As it was said maybe he has a great personality for sales and in sales a piece of paper does not matter its just knowing the product you are selling and knowing how to work people over to get the sales.
I have had friends jealous of me as you are of your friend but the difference is that when I work at any profession I work my ass off and work my way up the ladder much faster than anyone else. My most recent job before I go sick I worked my way to the head of my own department in 1 month because I took initiative and delegated the work load in a way that got more product out. I also still have my job if I am able to go back to work and the place I work for usually does not keep jobs for people.
So just work harder and quit being a negative nancy because that is probably one of the reasons you are not making your way anywhere but your friend is.
